After Belam fell in battle against the Cyprian Malachai, the Arelim retrieved her spirit and transformed her into a Nekoda, a shade with a body, to serve the Arelim. She gave up her name and became Nekoda Kennedy.
Nekoda was sent to the past, to the time when Adarian Malachai first escaped from Azmodea, to kill him. However Adarian was so weak and pitiful after his escape that she could not bring herself to kill him.
After her failure to kill Adarian, the Arelim sent her to 1997 to observe and try to save Nick.
Kody's loyalties are to Nick's mortal enemies. She will do anything to free them, even kill Nick. But the more she comes to know him, the less like an enemy he seems. He’s funny, a little goofy, and one of the most caring people she’s ever known.
How can he go evil?
Yet she knows he can't help himself. It's what he was bred for. She knows that he will eventually kill everyone she cares about, no matter what he's like now.
So she keeps telling herself that loyalty and duty and honor must come first. She must stay focused on her duties...
